Re: Pictures of Rotting Vintage Cars
vijay thats like a caravan sort of thing. Would have been ideal for a mobile fast food shop had the thing moved. Its the same Willys Station Wagon (pictures posted on page 1 here on this thread)with the Hurricane petrol engine of the 1950's and early 1960's. They (M&M)sold chassis of this model with the front part till the drivers cabin factory built,to enable buyers build bodies on the rear, and this appears to be one on which the tall and ugly metallic body was built.

QUOTE thackervijay another VW spotted at this guarage
Vijay this is a Volkswagen Passat sedan of the late 1980's or very early 1990's. Passat was introduced in 1988 by Volkswagen as estates and sedans, to show that they also made larger sedans and estates. This car was exported to many countries including the US and was powered by a 1.6L /4 cyl turbocharged engine. Also larger engines upto 2 L with a straight five cylinder layout taken from the Audi 90 and 100. Audi is owned by the VW group.

this is a Mercedes 170 V - it sports a 4 cyl petrol engine.But the car
you posted has its originality a bit messed up inside -the dash , meters are
not original ones. The engine is original. The front and rear bumpers are original. Note the
windscreen wipers operating from the top.
This
car was produced between 1935-41.The Pre-War 170V (called W 136) was
produced in several models, a Cabrio-Limo,
Cabriolet A and B models, and a very rare Roadster. The 170V continued
in 1947, with the 170D (D for diesel) and S models being produced later
upto 1953. It had a 1697 cc petrol engine.By 1955 the 170 series was
discontinued. It became the foundation on which the company rebuilt
after WW II because the tooling had survived Allied bombing.

Re: Pictures of Rotting Vintage Cars
Vijay and zinam - This is the VW Passat introduced sometime in 1988, if I am not wrong. It had a 1.6 L, four cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine and also came with TD engines of upto 2.0 L. The five cylinder ,in-line engines from the Audi 90 and 100 were also borrowed for the passat which came as sedans and estates. the one here is a sedan. VW wanted to show that it makes larger cars too. This car was exported to the US also. The front grille came to the Passat by the mid 1990's and continued thereafter.zinam wrote:Great pics Vijay.

Re: Pictures of Rotting Vintage Cars
Thanks a lot vibhor, zinam, CC and vijay!
The car belongs to my late, close friend an ex- State Minister (Mah) and ex-MP who died in a gory car accident in 2004 (Mitsubishi Lancer (2000 model of my friend) versus Tata Maharashtra State Transport Bus). The family uses newer cars (Scorpio, Honda City)now and say its bothersome to use this car on our narrow roads. They do not have any fondness for old cars as it involves spares hunt and lots of upkeep problems.
My friend was the second owner of this Mumbai registered car. He told me that this car used to run in FilmCity since till the late 1970's and can be seen in old Bollywood movies.I suggested that they sell this car away as it is decaying now. I have posted an ad in Rediff P4C Classifieds, where this car is featured. Its upholstery and dash are not original, but the engine and other parts are.
Have a look at its dash and interiors(latest)
The two pictures here are from 2003 when it was amidst better days.
You can visualise how time changes everything!
They say "time is the best healer" but in this car's case now "time is the best killer".
Lets only hope that it goes to some fit owner and sees better days and corroborate the old adage "time is the best healer" !

Re: Pictures of Rotting Vintage Cars
Yes CC miss the scene till the 1950's. The roads had less cars but most showrooms had CBU's fully imported waiting for buyers and we could get most international brands and contemporary models sold elsewhere in the world.
