Re: Pictures of Rotting Vintage Cars
napster and i'm hummer freak thanks -the earlier post was from wikipedia whereas the one below are my observations.
More on the Baby Austin as it was called:
The Austin 7 was a very popular small car of its times.Earlier these came with soft-tops and since the early 1930's hard tops too came by. Body and styling changes were kept minimal during the 17 year production span. It had a cranking handle to start the engine in the earlier versions and selfs were also available later. The car had a 6 volt current supply. The tyres and tubes of the Royal Enfield bullet can be very conveniently used as shoes for this car, which snugly fit in. spares are cheap and widely available through eBay auctions. The car has a great fan following and there are many clubs in the UK for owners who are members.
It was very popular in India earlier and among the most economical cars to own during its hey days. The car's durability over the years is superb, because we still find examples in running condition which participate in rallies or are in daily use.
Sometime in 2001 I found a pretty black one (1928 with soft-top) in good running condition, for which the owner was asking me Rs 125,000=00. I did not buy but hear that these are six years later selling for upwards of Rs 3 L.
Needless to say it was among the most popular Austins, apart from the Mini.
