One month with the Scorpio LX- The brute SUV has been with me now for a
month and I have been mostly driving it within the city with an
occasional drive just 10 or 15 kms outside the city.
The ownership experience has been quite pleasant for me till now but
for the immobiliser code changing. I have not been able to visit the
dealership and hope to get it done next week.
Maintaining and driving the SUV is quite like getting used to, for it
has a lot of eccentricities that require some patience and art to
master (MA) or many may vouch to get a PhD. But not aiming to get any such
degree is blasphemous if one owns a Scorpio. He or she must be able to master the art of handling such a beast.
Firstly, cleaning the SUV is like getting a elephant bathed and that
    has
to be done daily-I mean the dust and impurities that settle on it over
a period of 24 hours, since I last clean it are microscopic to
megascopic and give some kind of unattended appearance on the SUV. The
duster which I have acquired has made my job simpler. It has
wax coated cotton threads that absorb dust. Now there was a squall and
drizzle, followed by heavy rains in my city yesterday. I drove my SUV
for quite a distance for the first time in the rains. The wiper was
tried by me at almost all positions of which I found the intermittent
position to be OK for this kinda showers.
And the hell broke loose today morning! I found that the dirty and soil
laden raindrops had as usual been lodged on the paintwork and the
interior of the wheel arches and wheels becoming muddy. The duster can
do nothing and its a conventional wash and wipe job that has to be
undertaken in such cases (maybe daily during monsoons), which reminded
    me to
believe that I have a Mist Silver coloured elephant in my garage, only
going by its size and not hat its too heavy on the pocket on
maintenance like real "white elephants" as Englishmen say.
Driving in the rains was otherwise a pleasure and one feels so secure,
being ensconced on the seat of a tank like vehicle, with your seat belts
on. The wipers and the wash fluid if engaged and let out respectively
intermittently make driving in the rains a joy.Must also calculate and maneuver the
SUV optimally within limits, so that it does not misbehave- you've gotta
tame it! More of it a bit later.

What is the immobiliser code actually? Why do you have to change it?

@ crazy cat: i think the immobilizer code can be changed only in the scorpio. when you lock a scorpio with the remote key, it gets 'armed'. after this if anybody tries to open the car with a key or by tampering it, the siren will start & the immobilizer is activated, the engine wont start. to de-activate the immobilizer, the owner has to input a personalized 4 digit password/code through a button in the glovebox.
it needs to be changed because mahindra supplies all the scorpios with a default code, which apparently the thieves know!
newer scorpios (scorpio refresh) also comes with the iCat system (RFID technology) on the keys which makes it even more difficult for the thieves.

That's some new safety. But i guess not many owners will change it, or may be many won't even know about it.
I read in ACI that a Scorpio with immobiliser is stolen by disconnecting siren and using separate relay for starting the vehicle.

exactly, thats what happens when owners dont change the code. many owners are unaware. mahindra did help by informing owners through calls, especially after the latest spree of so many scorpios getting stolen.

    Post  anjan 20th May 2009, 9:29 pm

Continuing the review of my brute SUV, I relish every moment behind the
wheel. While driving it, I am perched high up on my mighty seat,
looking down at the tiny “other cars and two wheelers” giving me the
feeling of being an alpha male. Only a crude encounter with truck or a
Tata 407/609/907 or whatever, can deflate my balloon, if ever, that
inflates very fast again, when the other beast disappears. Its much
like my well kept pet dog, meeting a stray, while I am taking it for a
walk, getting its confidence shaken for a while but regaining it back
soon after a pat from me.
The turning radius is quite unbelievable
for a monstrous sized SUV and would shame many smaller cars that I have
driven. But the bulges on the Scorpio are many and you’ve got to care
for the footboard, OVRM’s and even the OE wheel caps that bulge on the
lower ends. While reversing a two wheeler parked behind your SUV may be
missed and it may get the lesson of its life, if trampled upon. And the
Scorpio owner may also end up paying insurance claims to the two
wheeler owner. Reversing the SUV isn’t cool at all and I have got to
look at everything behind me as they exist, before getting in and
engaging the reverse gear. Nothing to do here with the 4 headrests, but
it’s the sheer height of the SUV makes things tough for me. I am
seriously thinking of adding some reversing aids to facilitate my rear
    moves.
And a thumbs up for the showers that came down here where I live and
the lesser temperatures. I experimented and put off the AC, rolling
down the driver’s side window glass. The m Hawk grunt and growl is more
and more audible to the driver with the glass rolled down. And some
gentler turns and twists on the road with the SUV, that I could never
imagine during the past one month that I could negotiate in the fifth
gear, were all done @50 kmph in the 5th gear. There is an atleast 5 to
10 % increase in the mHawk engine output available to the driver with
the AC switched off. I am now getting used to driving without the AC on
and testing my Scorpio’s limits, but of course not causing any nuisance
to other traffic users. One also feels better connected with the road
and its pulse, with the driver’s side window glass rolled down.
Speaking of better connection, I was disconnected with the AC on a few
days back and while entering a gate scratched the driver's side OVRM
badly. It did'nt break but breaking it would have made poorer by 1400
bucks. Now thats neither broken nor replaced but wounded and affixed
there to remind me of that gory incident. I have retouched it with my
artistic black touches but "sachaayi chhup nahi sakti banawat ke
wasoolo se, ki khushboo aa nahi sakti kagaz ke phoolon se" would be the
befitting couplet here. I will post a picture of the retouched OVRM for
viewing here soon. More reviews later!

Well that's the benefit of having a SUV. 2 wheeler would maintain a safe distance and lower cars too.

Regarding its turning radius, i felt it be not good. It is better than Safari but Qualis and Innova are better. I once had a hard time in turning the Scorpio in a parking lot.

Scratching the ORVM is quite common, especially with new cars having bigger mirrors. On thing i noticed is, most drivers(mainly bus and truckers) judge a car only till the body and rarely check the mirrors of the car. I've seen some bikers, who at last moment cut to avoid the mirrors. This is more worse at night.

i agree, innova has a better turning radius, but i feel scorpio & qualis to be same. if qualis & innova are both better, i feel the reason maybe the puny tyres in both. but scorpio has a better turning radius than a palio!

All Fiats are very bad in turning. Qualis is definitely better than Scorpio, even Innova i guess. It has very short WB and i remembers its turning dia to be 9.8m, where as Scorp has 11.2m and Innova 10.8m. I've driven Qualis and Scorpio back to back many times. So could say surely that Qualis is better than Scorpio.

CC that way I feel Japanese small and mid sized cars excel in being made with less turning diameters.Their country is so small and crowded! Our manufacturers should get inspiration from them.

An American pop group "Hootie and the Blowfish" had an album "Cracked
Rear View" (meant a sad bygone past) released in the early 1990's with
a lovely song "Let Her Cry".
My right ORVM is a "Scratched Side View", but who's gonna cry for me ? :frustration:

Thanks RR for your concern. The duster costs Rs 475=00 but is worth every rupee.
Want to add another small review, as I am getting a few valid points to jot down.
Firstly about the immobiliser. The immobiliser has been eluding me since
day one. After a week or so, some told that it has no immobiliser at
all-even the technical information guy from the dealer, who had come
all the way to my house, to explain the operations of the SUV told me
so. Then I caught hold of the dealer and the Service Manager who did
not respond well being blissfully ignorant. After approaching the
company helpline more than two weeks back, the dealer contacted and
told me that I am welcome to the showroom to change the immobiliser
code. Then I was out of station for a short while and the link was
broken. Last Saturday, 24th May, I again contacted the company
helpline, as the dealer appeared to be still in a deep slumber (only
for my immobiliser). Today the person who at the dealer's service
department, deals with immobilisers, contacted me and told me something
that will fox all of us, if not all a great majority of us. I am sure I
had heard this earlier, from some teambhpian.
Unbelievable but true, the person told me that the present day Xylos,
Logans and Scorpios (no mention of Boleros?) are being fitted with a
second generation immobiliser. The older generation had a common
company code that would be changed and again and again changed, to suit
the owner's choice of four digits. And these second generation ones are
fed with a code from the company (from Scorpio Refresh onwards), that
is not known and is memorised in the key head. No other key can start
the engine. There is no need for changing codes, as each machine has a
different code. That settles the issue now for me and for any other
confused or hypnotised and confused (by dealers) buyers who feel
    immobiliser codes are too important.
Summarising, I have moved ahead from No Immobilisers to Second Generation Immobilisers - a giant leap in the murky, risky and dangerous world of automobile safety (only theft related) .
Secondly now, about the drives and pleasures of being behind the wheel
of the brute SUV- Driving the machine has been a pleasing experience
for me all through and I still vouch for the way I can drive around
cocooning myself and all occupants from the road conditions and outside
noises, with the glasses rolled up. The AC was on all through this time
due to the 45 degrees Celsius or more all around. The m Hawk is very,
very faithful to obey any command its given and never falters even when
I hurriedly plan to overtake a fast moving sedan that I simply want to
get ahead of. My little daughter when perched on the front seat
repeatedly says that Santros, 800's, Altos and i 10's look like toys,
from that commanding height of the Scorpio. I have more or less been
able to gauge the speeds and RPM's that are desirable for each gear.
A drawback of this SUV is that the A pillar is too thick and the ORVM
appended there on the door, creates a huge blind space. For the cause
safety, I have to move around my head and eyes when something appears
suspicious and is moving, beyond the fat and plump A pillar- its
dangerous! Visibility towards the left is more or less OK despite the
same appendages being there, but the right side has extra special
appendages on the SUV which are too near you and can be dangerous.

good short view of your monster again anja, but surely you need rear parking sensors or camera's which would make your rear view vision better as rightly u said that thick A pillar also does make your vision impound on something moving there, so be with eyes wide open and enjoy your beast.!!!!
