Thai-assembled Toyota Camry Hybrid in India in 2010

The Thai-assembled Toyota Camry hybrid which was displayed yesterday in a special ceremony will reportedly ship to India next year.

The Toyota Camry hybrid has its own tail lamp, headlamp and bumper, the three chief features apart from the ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’ badge setting it apart from the regular petrol model. 9,000 of these cars will roll out of the Gateway plant in Thailand in the first phase with local deliveries scheduled in August.

The automobile engineering under the skin of this Camry is surprisingly still hidden from the media. Whether the U.S Toyota Camry’s 2.4 liter-engine producing 147 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 187Nm of torque at 4,400rpm, paired to a 30kW (40 horses) electric motor with 270Nm of torque goes for the Thai Camry is anybody’s guess.

IMO this is not a right move by Toyota. With ordinary Camry failing because of high price, hybrid will boost up the price even higher.

hybrid population is increasing in Indian Automotive industry!
but in bangkok, taxes are too stiff for a hybrid to sell!

Me too think that its not the right move, 2010 is not far now, Its just next year only.
Firstly, Toyota should consider grabbing the Mid-luxury segment by selling the camry and when it becomes a well known car then they should consider its Hybrid version otherwise only 1-5 Hybrid Camrys will sell a year.
Honda was quite successful in selling the Civic Hybrid because Civic is already a very well known car in its segment.

IMO, Toyota wants to join the 'green race' with the Prius and the Camry as soon as possible. By launching the Camry Hybrid, it may not look at volumes, but try and grab some attention from the people. As far as pricing is concerned, it will be easily higher than the current one and hence, will not be a practical buy.

As far as the looks are concerned, I too like the regular Camry. The Hybrid one looks a bit plain-jane to me.

i agree on that.

looks good to me. but yes true that the current looks more muscular.but yes the lights are awsome on this one.

looks good but i dont think this will go well in the market, , it already is an expensive car, and if they introduce hybrid in it, then the pricing will be too high

yes the high price will make it difficult for toyota to sell this car.
