TATA TODAY LAUNCHES ITS XENON PICK UP!Tata launched its Xenon pick-up truck today. The Xenon is based on a modified Tata TL pickup chassis. Available only as a double-cab, it gets four doors and a load bay that can carry 220-kilos, officially; it’s designed to carry 500-kilos though.
It’s got a body on ladder frame chassis, load lugging leaf springs and a proper set of low-range gear ratios (in the 4WD version, of course).
Priced at Rs 7.8 lakh for the 2WD version and Rs 8.78 lakh for the 4WD version (both prices, ex-showroom Mumbai), Tata is clearly steering the Xenon far away from the farmers and aiming it at the weekend adventurer crowd. The standard equipment list boasts air-con, alloy wheels, power windows and power steering.
The Xenon’s powered by a 140bhp, 2.2-litre DiCOR engine from the Tata Safari. It looks the part, and with the Safari’s engine has enough power to keep you happy. True to its huge dimensions, it isn’t the best handler around and the ride is pickup truck like, which means it improves the more you load it. That said, it is quite enjoyable to drive once you get used to its size. It is quite capable off road too, with the limiting factor being the road-biased tyres that come standard with the truck.
On the inside, the seats are comfortable and thanks to the long wheelbase, there’s enough space. The only grouse is the rear seatback, which is a bit too upright. The dashboard is uncomplicated and switches are legibly laid out. However, the dashboard design could have been better. The big improvement is the fit and finish of dashboard panels, which truly impresses.
Despite its pick-up truck nature, you can register it as a private car (saves you the trouble of running around with taxi plates) – just like the Mahindra Getaway, its only competition. :)(ACI)
