you dont have to chekc them every week, once in a month is enough for modern cars, and about the driving tips, always be alert because you dont know how things might comeup in a ghat session, and drive slow near turns and blindspots, never overtake at blindspots, dont keep your car in neutral while driving down the hill, dont turnoff your engine while driving down the hill, use headlights on lowbeam while driving during nights, and last but not the least "wear seatbelts"
    have a safe journey

I'll answer your second question first. Yes you need to check oil and water levels even in modern cars. Do it once in a month. And also before long drives, especially hills.

For your first question, you need to be alert all the time. You should not lose concentration, just because the road is free for most of the time. Be ready for any kind of obstacles on the road. Always keep to your left. This is very important because, the roads over there are not wide like plains. On downhill, play safe and stay in a lower gear. Use brakes to keep in check. Rely more on engine braking(by using lower gears). If you use vehicles brake more often, it would get heat, then fade, and at a stage may refuse to brake. Look out for bigger vehicles(trucks and buses), don't play with them, their vehicles are relatively bigger in size and they cannot make quick movements like a car.
    And Wear seat belts.

@JJ, You start many threads but you are responding to it properly. Check your threads frequently and reply to it whenever necessary.

albeit solved, there are still somethings i'd like to add at the risk of anyone not reading it at all.

check oil, water DAILY - irrespective of a new age car or old age car. Don't rely on the "automatic" equipment so heavily. If you have the time, check stuff like this daily - it only takes a few seconds for a peaceful mind rather that start worrying at the slightest indication even though faulty.
There have also been instances where the sensors have failed - including brake level and coolant level sensors.
What everyone FORGOT to mention completely was freezing points of coolant - a hill station would mean lower temperatures and the coolant in the engine can freeze - while many might know the anamolous behaviour of water - for those who don't -water starts to expand at 4degrees and below and this might cause your radiator to crack. Anti freeze liquids lower the freezing point of the coolant but in countries like india, coolants don't have propylene or ethylene glycol which are the constituents of anti freeze.

Also, remember on highways - city driving rules don't apply, you can't overtake from the left, because the roads don't have dividers and you might end up killing the guy that simply swerved right to check for oncoming traffic.

Mods should set up a separate thread on safe driving practices especially differentiating between city, expressway and highway driving.
