Maruti Suzuki India, has claimed that its Alto has recorded highest ever sales in March at 23,569 units, thereby crossing the 20,000 mark in a month for the 11th time. Alto witnessed a jump of 20.98% during the month over the corresponding period last year. MSI had sold 19,482 units in March, 2008. Last month was the 51st consecutive month for the company, in which Alto crossed the 10,000 units mark.
“So far only two cars in the history of Indian automobile industry have crossed the 20,000 units mark in single month - once by M800 and 11 times by Alto,” a Maruti official said.
Maruti sold 2.12 lakh units of the car in 2008-09. Alto was the first car to sell over two lakh units in the domestic market in a single financial year — 2006-07, he added. Last year, the 800cc car crossed 10 lakh units mark since its launch in September, 2000, of which 1.87 lakh units have been sold in the overseas markets.
