Maruti Alto clocks highest sales ever!

Maruti Suzuki India, has claimed that its Alto has recorded highest ever sales in March at 23,569 units, thereby crossing the 20,000 mark in a month for the 11th time. Alto witnessed a jump of 20.98% during the month over the corresponding period last year. MSI had sold 19,482 units in March, 2008. Last month was the 51st consecutive month for the company, in which Alto crossed the 10,000 units mark.
“So far only two cars in the history of Indian automobile industry have crossed the 20,000 units mark in single month - once by M800 and 11 times by Alto,” a Maruti official said.

Maruti sold 2.12 lakh units of the car in 2008-09. Alto was the first car to sell over two lakh units in the domestic market in a single financial year — 2006-07, he added. Last year, the 800cc car crossed 10 lakh units mark since its launch in September, 2000, of which 1.87 lakh units have been sold in the overseas markets.

If Alto goes like this, then it would cross the sales of 800 very soon, provided Nano doesn't divert customers by delivering it quickly.

The nano will not be able to reach these figures initially unless their new plants are fully functional.
The alto is no doubt an amazing car for the price tag it carries.
But i think there need to be some changes considering the Nano is here.

Alto has really sold in very good numbers just like other maruti models, Even I was also considering the alto when we bought our 800, but didn't went for alto as it was a very fresh product and we didn't knew how will it perform in market, Also, At the price tag on which we were getting fully loaded top end(DX) variant of 800, at that price tag alto's simple base model came, so finally we went for the 800 only. :)

alto has been the true brother of the 800. but yes it needs some fresh changes to keep up with the competition.

If Maruti needs to compete with the Nano now, It should lower the price of the Alto and get some changes in it which makes it a better buy than the Nano.

Real competitor to nano is actually 800 and maruti has reduced its price a bit but they need to offer few more features on its base version. :)

Some features that both these cars need now are power steering, left hand side mirror, power windows in the front atleast, a tad more powerful engine, ABS, tubeless tyres, rear parcel tray, fog lamps, central locking, full wheel covers, etc.

These features will help keep both in motion because the Nano is hot on the heels of the 800 and the soon to be launched Spark 800cc will try and eat the Alto for lunch.

For a more powerful engine, A-star's engine would be a good option. It is more powerful, delivers more mileage in A-star than the Alto(So in Alto it should deliver more) and pollutes less too. It would be a great option, provided it fits in Alto. They can use 800cc for base model and 1000cc for higher variants with PS, PW,etc..

Hey CC thats an awesome idea. Maruti has to anyway change the engine to make the car meet euro 4 emission norms..!!
