Swift to get the "K-Series" Engine!! Empty Swift to get the "K-Series" Engine!!

Post  Road Rocket 22nd May 2009, 7:47 pm

Maruti Suzuki will soon launch the K-Series powered Swift. The Swift petrol is currently powered by a 1.3 litre engine derived from the Esteem. The G13B engine is not only outdated, it has poor driveability too. But Maruti is not replacing the engine for power or torque. April 2010 will see Bharat IV norms come into effect and Maruti’s G-Series engine won’t be Bharat IV compliant. Thus Maruti will copy-paste the engine into the Swift petrol from the recently launched Ritz.
The 1.2 litre K-Series engine will help in two ways. Better mileage and lesser duties. The Indian Government gives excise benefits to petrol cars having engine capacity less than 1200cc. So that will amount to 4% excise duty reduction on the Swift petrol, the Swift diesel already gets this benefit. Can we expect a reduction in the price of the Swift petrol? Your guess is as good as ours.

Swift needs this engine real soon, as many are turned down by the arrival of new engine and avoid Swift for that. I guess there won't be any reduction in price. 1.3 is decade old engine and its development cost could have been taken by Suzuki long back. But the 1.2 engine is brand new, considering the development cost, i don't expect a price reduction. And also if they reduce price, it'll get too close to Ritz.

If Swift also gets this engine, then its main USP, the performance, will drop and it will lose its sporty, buzzy, free-revving character. And one more thing, the Swift 1.3 has very decent driveability and I have no regrets with it whatsoever. In fact, I quite love it.

Reading the review of Ritz, i feel that this 1.2l KB engine is not a big improvement in power, but can give good mileage. Can't comment on driveability, as i haven't driven Swift petrol.

new kb series with 1.2L engine will get some excise benifit for sure, also more efficiency would be available may be that punch would be missed in new engine as compared to 1.3, IMO.

absolutely, the reviews say that the new 1.2 ltr engine is designed to be more fuel efficient and not for more performance, and moreover there is a decrease of 0.1ltr in the engine and that means the BHP will also come down,

maruti just wants its cars to be sold. it just needs the rise in the no of units sold. otherwise whats the point in having the same engine in two hatchbacks which dont even differ in aspects such as price and features....

MOD NOTE: PLEASE AVOID SMS LINGO & ECESSIVE USE OF '.......S'.

i agree on maruti just wanting to sell cars by giving same engine in different cars. but IMHO i think thats what there job is - to satisfy different needs of different customers.

exactly bro. they have to satisfy the different needs of different customers. then why do they have to launch another car which is more or less the same as swift. it would have made sense if maruti had launched a car in a different segment.

atleast a bigger engine for the swift might be a gud option.

swift and ritz are not the same car mate. there are quite a few differences. swift still appeals to some. whereas ritz is for those who have got bored with swift. so maruti has got a new car in the market for those who feel 'enough of swift we want something new'. and there are still people who think 'swift rocks'. i agree the engine is being brought down from 1.3l to 1.2l but how much of that 100ml will make a difference i dont know. but one thing is sure the FE of newer swift will be better and that is what is one of the most important factor to survive in indian market.
rest as people are talking bout 1.6l engine being brought to india. IMO that can be dangerous as that will take its price upwards of 7 lacs which isnt very comfortable place for hatchbacks in india.

By launching newer models & not phasing out old models, is going to be a disaster in the long term for maruti. Am waiting for the Euro NCAP Regulations to be introduced for the Vehicles sold in India, that alone will force these stubborn & greedy manufacturers to reluctantly phase out the old jalopies for good. I'm waiting to see the last nail hit on these flying coffins for good! :war:

As for the engine transplant, 1.3 Vs 1.2, power hungry folks will always find ways & means to tweak the new engine & get more out from it, so don't you guys worry about them. In India, fuel efficiency is paramount - just ask 9 out of 10 indian motorists.
