    Cool Indian S.U.V scene

Post  Aviral Tyagi 10th May 2009, 10:58 am

    Hi Motorheads!
i wanted to throw some light upon the indian s.u.v scenario. No offence some of us don't know how to categories the vehicles(i am not talking about any member of this website). In india we say Toyota Innova, Chevy Tavera, Xylo and even the Qualis is an S.U.V!!! even some of the magazines have awarded Innova the SUV of the year award!!!!!! :frustration:
S.U.Vs are meant to be 4x4.... BUT no one cares. Only scorpio, Safari, Endeavour & pajero are proper offroaders (for a normal guy, not taking biggeer baddies like the Montero and Q7 in consideration). People in india think a BIG People carrier is an S.U.V!! 🇳🇴
please do something regarding this issue!

    Hi Aviral,
Welcome to TAI forums, Have a pleasant stay here, Also, Do introduce yourself in "Introduction" section if you wish to. :)
Coming to the topic, I agree with you that in India many people still don't know how to categorise the cars in their proper segments, Thats mainly because of less awareness and knowledge of automobiles but now we can see that slowly people's passion towards automobiles in increasing day by day.

Yes Aviraj, but time is moving now and people are getting more aware of this industry and their category as well but general perception would take time to change as any big vehicle say above sedans are suv's for common man cause suv for them means huge, big and can manage more people. Also introduce yourself in its section and welcome.

dude, most of the people dont even know what an suv stands for, nor do hey know about the difference between 2wheel and 4wheel drives, all they need need is a big car which can fit all their needs, only a limited no. of people think about the specs before they opt for an suv or the so called SUV's:frustration:

Yeah that's right. Actually there are many terms and that confuses all, SUV, MUV, MPV, did i miss anything?

There a bit correction in your point, Pajero and Endeavor are great for off-roading and can't be compared with Sorp or Safari. Scopr and SAfari are meant for the average off-roader.

    "Station Wagon"

That's the term used for SUV's , MPV's or MUV's in our native village.

" Accha, dekho bhaiyajee station wagon lekar aaye hain"

This is what they said when we took a Ford Endeavour there.
    What the hell yaar!

Seriously, Aviral has pointed out a correct thing.

Vibhor, there is no passenger car type like MAV. maruti has tagged their Wagon R as MAV (Multi Activity Vehicle) & that was just a marketing gimmick.

    Bmw's sports activity vehicle!
Scorp and safari are offroaders , yeah not comparable to the paj. And the endy, bt they can crawl some terrains, at least they come in 4x4 versions. The safari even has a L.S.D(LIMITED SLIP DIFFRENTIAL).

That station wagon thing ws awesme. Endy a station wagon. Ha ha ha :D

    Guys
Glad to know we have some guys who thinks the major flaw in understanding the meaning of classification of cars. We go ga ga on Safari/Scorpio the best sembelence to an SUV but still the majority of sales are a 2X2 versions--------------------the 4wd concept is still not born in India. When I bought a 4X4 Safari most of my frnds asked "Kya karoge-----???"!!!!!!!!! No Safaris go down the roads/off the roads as delicatley as Marutis----in the villages (Badi gadi----netaji ki gadi Rolling Eyes )
I feel like giving awards to some car ads in INDIA----------HAVE YOU SEEN Frustration SX4 growling at a 16 wheeler SEMI Trailor can u belive it. Has any one ever seen the two together ???????????
WE BELIEVE WHAT WE ARE SHOWN --------this is how we feel and rate our cars.

dude who is believing the SX4 add? we all know what the car is capable of. its just a representative way to show in the advertisement.
and about 4x4 vehicles. well they arent really needed for city driving in india. most of the people who buy big cars like safari and scorpio buy it either for snob value or because of the large families that we have in india or for carrying heavy load. outside india in some countries people are well-off economically and so can afford adventure like going off-roading alone in their 4x4 vehicles. but in india vehicles are still more or less majorly used only for transportation. so thats the simple logic why 4x4 are not sold in india. because they are not needed here. you dont need a 4x4 in india if you have to get your relatives home from the airport with all their baggage. all that is needed is a big car. and that is the market potential in india, which companies are tapping very well.
rest what is in a name SUV or MUV? its not who you are but what you do that matters Wink and the bottom line is that whatever the companies claim about their products you are getting it. thats what i feel is most important for any product. it should deliver what the manufacturer claims.

I agree that SX4 ad is not believable. But it is just a way to demonstrate SX4's looks. But coming 4x4, for us many have no idea about exactly what off-road experience is about. Not many are interested in adventure. But yeah ads have a direct response from buyers, many people even now buy blindly based on an ad.

Yes CC you are correct. SX4 ad was good enough to attract at least some percentage of potential buyers. Don't think beyond that, because we know what exactly is the fact Wink I am from Kerala and I can tell you that people really understand the use of 4x4 here. You could see Mahindra 4x4 dominating in some of the districts. I think, this should be more or less the same in else where in the hilly terrains in India. However, regarding SUV, I completely agree. Well, we are still learning to classify the vehicles!

One could see more M&M 4WD jeeps in Kerala. I guess that suits their wet hilly sections very well.
