hey guys, i have always wondered about one thing. You guys must be knowing the "run-flats" tyres that come on BMWs in India. But are they tubeless? Because those tyres can be run after flat tyre also and so can tubeless tyres but in another thread some member said that tubeless tyres give comfort while run-flats dont! SO GUYS HELP ME OUT!

Runflats can run for 50 kms after a flat. To ensure no damage taking place, its sidewall is hardened and thus gives you a stiff ride over other tyres.

but its always better to change before u complete 50kms as though the sidewalls are hardened... they wud get damaged with the weight of the car... BMW's have a suspension that keep the level of the car same even in case of a flat tyre... but our normal cars arent capable of doing the same...

In run Flats there instead of tube, there is a renforced silicon layer uner the rubber layer, and the sidewalls are renforced too.
BEEMERS running on runflats do not have a Spare Wheel.!!!!!

Run Flats are tubeless?? Empty Additional Information

    Post  Hades 26th June 2009, 3:03 am

here some seldom known interesting facts .

the run flat technology was intended as an additional safety factor for high speed running on freeways. in countries like the US, the average speed is about 80-100mph which is really high to have a blown tyre or a puncture. The second is personal safety since the user does not have to stop the car to change wheels on a fast highway, in poor weather, in the dark or in a high crime area. Another obvious advantage is convenience since the journey can be completed without stopping. Further advantages are gleaned from not needing to carry a spare wheel: The space can be used for other purposes. Also, the absence of a spare wheel contributes to lower vehicle weight which will in turn reduce fuel consumption, reduce harmful exhaust emissions, improve performance, handling and braking characteristics. A further advantage is that all production vehicles equipped with run flat tires are also fitted with a tire pressure monitoring device which warns the driver of a tire pressure loss. Many cars which use conventional tires do not have tire pressure monitoring systems. The future strategic direction of the automobile industry also favors manufacturers which use run flat tires, because alternative fuel vehicles require careful use and optimization of storage space and the absence of a spare wheel is a major advantage. For example, space for additional secondary fuel tanks is required for petrol powered cars with secondary CNG, LPG or Hydrogen fuel systems. Hybrid petrol/electric type vehicles require storage space for battery packs. Removing the provision of a spare wheel in the design phase of such vehicles can therefore contribute to improved integration of alternative power in future generations of automobiles.
