Dry Clutch-
The Clutch Plate(s) is/are not immersed in Oil when the engine is running. Or should I say this way, Clutch Plate(s) is/are not lubricated with oil when the engine is running unlike Wet Clutch. Upshifting and Downshifting without Clutch is Not Smoothly Possible in Dry Clutch Vehicles.
Examples- Tata Indica, Tata Indigo.
Wet Clutch-
The Clutch Plate(s) is/are immersed in Oil when the engine is running. Or should I say this way, Clutch Plate(s) is/are lubricated with oil when the engine is running unlike Dry Clutch. Upshifting and Downshifting without Clutch is Smoothly Possible in Wet Clutch Vehicles if Engaged Properly.
Examples-
Bikes- All Indian Bikes (Motorcycles) (If you opened the Clutch Plate Chamber (Normally placed on the right side of the engine from where you pour the Engine Oil).
Cars- Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
You can find whether your vehicle has Dry or Wet Clutch by looking in the Specifications Section of Owner's Manual. There it is mentioned Wet Sump or Dry Sump.
I don't remember exactly. But will post tomorrow.

Thanks sudeepd for the info.
Guys i've now mastered clutch less gearshifts in bikes :jump: , at least to my satisfaction.

Clutch less shift sometimes help in drags. its a practice we used while 400m drags(bikes) but i guess i am gonna give it a try in normal traffic.

It's for bikes only...NOT CARS!
Gentlemen,
The post was for bikes, not cars. You'll destroy your gearbox if you try this in cars (I still don't know how it's possible because of the larger gear ratios/sizes and inertia component).
Since the gears are small enough, you may upshift, but downshifting will call the engine to race and this might cause the gear box to overspeed - ofcourse, efficiently stopping is obtained from downshifting, but easing into a lower gear is always preferred than forcing the gear wheels to engage.
Although, shell DOES say it's ok - that's just an advertisement of their high quality gear box oil, which reduces friction, blah blah. I still say use the clutch, but don't overuse it. That's why they put it there for cryin' out loud! more control, lesser wear, besides, a clutch and pressure plate cost peanuts compared to a new gearbox! Why don't you think they'd want to make it cheaper?

The article by Shell is for bikes only. But we were discussing about whether it is possible in cars, that created a confusion, i guess.

well, I know for a fact that you can't change gears in cars without the clutch unless someone has actually done it. I do know however that you don't need the clutch to slip out from gear into neutral, infact my old Mahindra Classic used to slip out into neutral from 3rd gear automatically, especially when going down hill. Very scary...

this is possible in bikes for sure but not in cars, you''l endup wiht a damaged gearbox, you can bring the gear to nutral without the clutch but you cant shift into a gear , how ever i find most of the bus drivers(90%) shifting gears without using clutch, they only use it in 1st gear

oh, they're double clutching! that's what you do with bigger engines and older technology. It's clutch out - shift to 1st - clutch in -clutch out-shift to neutral - clutch in- clutch out - shift to 2nd - clutch in etc. etc.
It seems that they're not using the clutch, but they are - that's something else called half clutching. that's so that they don't change gears all that often, and they remain in 3rd gear all the time.

no no, they keep changing gears all the time, in the city traffic they have to keep changing gears ,once they shift from first gear they res their left leg and do the rest of the job with right leg, this is being dony by all the local transport busses

Many bus and truck drivers use clutch only for slotting into first gear and move and after that they don't use it.

hmmmm, not to be arrogant or anything, but I really haven't travelled by bus lately, so I haven't noticed it, but it could be because the gears have already worn out. that or some setting in the clutch itself - perhaps they're just ramming the gears in eventuallty damaging the gear box.

One Person I know who shifts Gears without using the clutch in his Safari 3.0 DiCOR. He upshifts as well as downshifts the gears without the clutch with Great Ease and without giving jerks. Most of the members here know him. He is Manish Sarser.
