Excellent pictures of an excellent looking car. It was much ahead of its times when introduced in 1960 in India by Standard Motors Ltd, Chennai. Its actually the Triumph Herald of the U.K. that was also called as the poor man's sports car abroad. The car sported an OHV four cylinder 948 cc engine. Its weakest point was the rear suspension, that could not survive the torturous Indian roads. Its bodyline was also a bit frail to withstand our road conditions. Axle breakages were common. After the Govt made indigenisation compulsory in the mid- 1960's the CKD kits from the U.K. stopped coming. The Indian made body was still weaker.
As a result very few examples survive today. Most of these cars have been junked and scrapped.
In comparison we can see many Fiats and Ambassadors of the 1960's still surviving, due to their better build quality.

This car has fresh looks even now. But sad to hear that it had weak body and didn't withstand our conditons.
@anjan, do you have any Vintage cars?

Crazy Cat I own a 1955 Landmaster.I will post its pictures soon.
Back to the topic, the Herald sold extremely well during the early 1960's. It was a status symbol way back then. The problems came to the fore after the car became Indianised.I was reading about superstar Rajesh Khanna's first car - a white Standard Herald, to which he was emotionally attached for a long time keeping it intact. Perhaps he still owns it.

This is a post 1966 Standard Herald, four door sedan. It should be a 1970 model in all probability. Its looks are original and the car is owned by a Heritage Vehicle Owner's Club of Thane (HVOCT) member.

The main problem with heralds were
    1) Rear suspension design, which caused premature tire wear, and created a caamber in the wheels which was an eyesore.
    2) Two door bodystyle which is not popular in India
    3) Weak body
    4) Engine which did not match its sporty looks.

Overall, it was a good product which was ahead of its time, and suffered partly due to poor quality problems with the company.
